Summary: Racial tension is at a boiling point, and Rachel's family has been obliged to move back to Birchtwon after being chased out of Shelburne by white delisted soldiers. In this third installment of Rachel's story, the unthinkable happens - after asking to see their certificates of freedom, a soldier marches Rachel and her mother through the woods, saying that he must show their certificates to a superior officer to prove that the two of them are not still slaves. But as they march farther and farther afield, night falls, the beast in the forest howl, and Rachel becomes terrified.
